Saint Joseph Vaz, the ‘Apostle of Ceylon’ (1651–1711), was a priest of the Oratory of St Philip Neri, greatly loved in Goa, southern India and Sri Lanka. During a time of fierce persecution he followed the Oratorian way of life as far as possible, and established many small groups led by laymen to teach and encourage Catholics. He was canonized on 14 January 2015, and this brief life written by Fr Jerome Bertram of the Oxford Oratory was published to celebrate the occasion and promote devotion to this saint.
